Listing Referees on your Resume

There are no hard rules when it comes to listing referees on a resume but there are a couple of things to take into account.

Most recruitment agencies and companies have privacy policies aimed at protecting you, the candidate. Under most privacy policies, your referees should only be contacted if you are in serious contention for a position – generally if you are shortlisted among the top 3 candidates.

However, we know from experience that such privacy policies are not always complied with. This becomes problematic as it can lead to your referees being contacted even when you’re not in contention for a position.

Something to note - if you're applying directly to an organisation, your referees are likely only to be contacted if you are being seriously considered for a role.
